The day’s highlight will be a warm and welcoming traditional Haida dinner in the home of a local Elder, where you’ll experience authentic Haida cuisine and learn about the culture and history of Haida Gwaii. This intimate gathering offers a unique opportunity to connect with the land, the people, and the stories that make Haida Gwaii so special. The evening will also include an orientation to ensure you’re fully prepared for the adventures ahead, setting the stage for the incredible experiences to come.
Day 2—
Immerse Yourself in Haida Culture and Nature
Start your day at the Haida Heritage Centre with a guided pole tour, where you’ll learn about the significance of Haida totem poles and their cultural stories. Next, explore the Saahlinda Naay Haida Gwaii Museum, delving deeper into the island’s history through exhibits of ancient artifacts and Haida craftsmanship.
In the afternoon, engage in a hands-on cultural experience by weaving Western red cedar bark, an essential Haida craft that connects you to the island’s traditions. You’ll also have the option to join a guided interpretive hike along the GuuhlGa Siiwaay K’yuu - Spirit Lake Trail, where you’ll discover the natural beauty of the island while learning about its flora, fauna, and Haida heritage.
Day 3—
Discover the Rich History and Culture of Masset
Discover the artistry of Haida Gwaii with a visit to local Haida artists in their carving sheds, where you'll learn about the intricate process of totem pole creation—from selecting the tree to the final raising. Explore Haida art galleries showcasing both traditional and contemporary works, then visit the Dixon Entrance Maritime Museum to delve into the region’s maritime history.
In the afternoon, travel to North Beach to view a totem pole in the Hiellen Longhouse Village. You’ll have the option to take an easy hike to the blowholes or a more moderate hike up Tow Hill, a historic landmark used by Haida canoes navigating Dixon Entrance. Both hikes offer breathtaking views and a deeper connection to the island’s natural and cultural heritage.
Day 4—
Choose Between Two Amazing Marine Adventures
Option 1: K’uuna Llnagaay (Skedans) – Ancient Haida Village
Embark on an unforgettable journey to K’uuna Llnagaay, an ancient Haida village site located on the east coast of Haida Gwaii. After a one-hour zodiac ride, you’ll explore this historic location, which has been uninhabited since the 1880s but still boasts a stunning collection of totem poles standing proudly in their original positions. The site offers a powerful glimpse into the past, where you’ll connect with the culture and stories of the Haida people.
Option 2: Salmon Fishing Adventure
Set off on a scenic hour-long boat ride to the west coast for a thrilling day of salmon fishing in Cartwright Sound. Known for its nutrient-rich waters, this area on the west-facing side of Graham Island is a prime location for salmon, attracting fish from major migratory runs along the west coast. Locals refer to these fertile waters as Skidegate Point, where you’ll fish for delicious salmon in one of the most abundant fishing grounds in the region. After your successful catch, your salmon will be professionally packaged for you to take home (third-party fees based on weight).
Both experiences offer excellent opportunities to view marine life along the way.
Day 5—
Meet The Communities of Port Clements and Tlell
Start your day with an easy hike along the Golden Spruce Trail, where you’ll be surrounded by towering old-growth trees and visit the spot where the legendary Kiid K’iiyas (Ancient Tree) once stood. Afterward, head to Port Clements to explore the local museum, offering a fascinating glimpse into Haida Gwaii’s pioneer history and the island’s cultural evolution.
In the afternoon, enjoy the art galleries in Tlell, where you can discover the works of local artists inspired by the island’s landscapes and heritage. Finish your day with a tranquil walk along a sandy beach, taking in the peaceful surroundings and reflecting on the beauty and history of Haida Gwaii.
Day 6—
Farewell: A Day of Reflection and Departure
Your final day begins with a visit to Balance Rock, one of Haida Gwaii’s most iconic and photographed landmarks. The striking natural formation offers a serene spot to reflect on your time spent on the island.
Next, we’ll travel to Daajing Giids (Queen Charlotte) to pick up your freshly packaged fish, a memorable souvenir from the island’s bountiful waters.
